Living Will/ Health Care Directive
An important estate planning tool is the living will/health care directive which is a two part document purely related to health care decisions.
The first part, in short, directs your doctor as to your intentions in the event that a medical illness prevents you from telling the doctor yourself.
For example, many have strong feelings about life support. Outlining your wishes in advance secures your ability to maintain your dignity and respect under the worst of circumstances.
Since medicine is not always black and white, the second component, authorizes a designated person, chosen by you to make all other medical decisions on your behalf when needed for crucial options related to treatment and recovery.
One of the key components to this designation is not necessarily to appoint the person who loves you the most, but the person who will make a decision consistent with your beliefs and intentions.
